Step-by-Step Guide to AFIP Certification

Step 1 – Order Materials

You can apply for AFIP Certification on this site or through an AFIP Industry Member servicing your dealership. You’ll receive all the information you need to study for the exam as part of the fee for certification (see your individual program of study for more details).

Step 2 – Study

You should set aside at least 40 hours over six to eight weeks to study for the exam. Your materials come with a syllabus that walks you through the process step by step. Read the syllabus carefully, as everything you need to know about AFIP Certification and studying is there. Our program offers the lessons in three mediums you can combine to tailor a program for your specific learning style: reading the supplied text, watching the video lectures, and listening to audio lectures.

Step 3 – Schedule a Review

AFIP (and in some cases, your mentor) provides a detailed pre-exam review session to give you a chance to solidify your knowledge and ask any questions you may still have. If you’d like to join one of AFIP’s reviews, check our calendar to view our review schedule. Once you’ve decided which review you’d like to join, please call 817.428.2434 to sign up. (Schedule subject to change without notice.)

Step 4 – Take the Test & Submit Necessary Documents

AFIP has contracted with PSI (formerly LaserGrade) to offer the AFIP Certification exam at hundreds of testing centers around the nation. To locate a center near you, go to www.lasergrade.com, click “Locate a Testing Center,” enter your zip code and select the AFIP exam from the drop-down menu. The website will display a list of the nearest testing centers. Select the center you’d like to use and call 800.211.2754 to set up your appointment.

On occasion and when approved by AFIP, some candidates may be asked to take the test with a live proctor. These sessions are heavily controlled. The proctor must be both AFIP Certified and approved to give the exam and the facilities must be classroom-like in nature. Under no circumstances is an individual to proctor an exam for someone with whom they work (at the same company, regardless of physical location) or with whom they have a personal non-business relationship. Exams taken with a live proctor are subjected to greater scrutiny than those in the controlled PSI environments. For more information, contact AFIP.

Please note that Senior candidates must also submit their Applied Ethics Workbooks to AFIP to become a certified member. No candidate can become certified until AFIP has received all required documentation (your test with passing scores, electronically or hand-signed Code of Ethics, Senior candidate Applied Ethics Workbook, and any other documentation requested by AFIP).

Step 5 – Receive Your Results

Candidates testing at a PSI (formerly LaserGrade) facility will receive a printout with their grades before they leave the center. This copy is for your records – PSI will transmit the results to AFIP. If you receive a failing grade (less than 80 percent on any section), you must retake only the section(s) you failed. You will be required to wait a minimum of two weeks between testing sessions – no exceptions. (Candidates who test with live proctors may have to wait up to two weeks for scores.)

When you have passed all three sections of the test, you will receive your recognition materials. They will arrive via FedEx Ground six to eight weeks after you receive your grades.
